5 Steps to Removing the Social Mask and Being Yourself

“ She had blue skin,
And so did he.
He kept it hid
And so did she.
They searched for blue
Their whole life through,
Then passed right by-
And never knew.”
― Shel Silverstein

Here’s my thing, I refuse to be fake in my lifetime. You can tell a lot about a human being by knowing whether or not they live a life that’s true to themselves.

It’s taken me many years of determined growth to be able to honestly share my truth with the world.

The process of breaking away from what society says you should be and growing into the person that you know you CAN be is an incredibly difficult one. And that’s why most never take the journey.

Most are only able to truly be themselves behind closed doors, as soon as the door opens, out come the masks.

They wear a mask at work, they wear a mask at the in-laws, they wear a mask with their friends, and they wear a mask when interacting with strangers. With so many covers you end up losing yourSELF, and losing who you are is one of the greatest tragedies of life.

I look around, and I observe so many people who have lost themselves in this society. You are probably familiar with these people. They are angry, unhealthy, and unhappy. They have no purpose and trudge through life like a water buffalo trudging through neck-high mud.

We attract what we ARE not what we want, so how can you attract the life that was meant for you when who you truly are remains hidden behind the fear of being seen? You can’t, it is impossible ever to find contentment in this lifetime if you are hiding behind a mask.

Removing the mask will not happen overnight, it is a slow process that will begin with baby steps. As you gradually gain confidence and progress toward living a life that is true to yourself, your destined path will start to reveal itself to you. This road can only manifest when we make a choice to step up and evolve as a human.

Like Jim Rohn said, “Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better”.

Below I have listed six steps that, if implemented, will help you to become content and successful in all areas of your life.

1. Stop Worrying about What other People Think

“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner”. – Lao Tzu

This quote is the big one. So many people live miserable lives, lives of quiet desperation because they allow the opinions of others to control their destiny. They are so scared of being judged that they allow their dreams to die. You have a message, you have a passion, you are a creator, but your passion, message, and creations will have no impact on the world if you do not share them with your fellow human.  Letting go of the good and bad opinions of others is a huge step in personal growth and a necessary step on your journey of success. As long as you cower in the face of judgment, you will stay exactly where you are. If your current location in life is great and you are content, then keep doing what you are doing, but if you want to become a true success and find real contentment in your life, then you must remove the masks.

2. Accept Yourself

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her. – Lao Tzu

Understand that each and every one of us has a story to tell. Everything that you’ve been through in your life has been for a reason. People are going through the same struggles that you’ve already overcome; you hold a light for those people. When you begin to accept and believe in yourself truly, you cause a ripple effect and those around you start to believe in themselves. By accepting who you are and sharing that truth with the world, you become a leader and your life takes on meaning. I can tell you from experience, an authentic life of meaning is so much more rewarding than a miserable, selfish life of comfort and conformity.

3. Be an Encourager

“Everyone has the potential to be an encourager. You don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to be a genius. You don’t have to have it all together. All you have to do is care about people and initiate.” – John C Maxwell

If you want something in this life, you have first to give it. If you want love, give love. If you want success, help others succeed, and if you crave support and encouragement, support and encourage those on the same path as you. So many people out there are taking the road less traveled. They have removed the mask and are walking to the beat of their drum. With the power of social media, we can watch as these people share their authentic selves with the world knowing that they face ridicule and judgment. So many times we sit back and watch and pass judgment ourselves. Put yourself in the shoes of these people, don’t worry about what they are putting out and whether or not you agree with it because that has no bearing on your life.  Send them a message, comment on their post, let them know that you admire their bravery and that they are an inspiration. Sometimes it takes stepping out of the mirror and pouring into others to be able to gain the confidence to remove your mask and reveal who you truly are. These people that you support will end up supporting and encouraging you, and it makes the journey of self-discovery a bit of a smoother ride.

4. Follow your Heart

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray” – Rumi

This quote has a simple, yet profound message. Plug your ears to the advice and opinions of others, especially if they are not where you want to be in life. Listen to your heart, your intuition. If it feels good to you and fits the vision of your life, do it regardless of what people may say or think of you. Your heart will never lie to you so trust it and utilize it to create the life that YOU want to live. No more quiet desperation, only triumph and contentment.

5. Affirm your Greatness Last but not least, declare your greatness. The legendary motivational speaker Les Brown has made this phrase famous. He says, “You have something special, you have greatness within you.” Les Brown’s message is something that we have to take to heart. Every single human has the seed of greatness within them, but its chance of growing is predicated upon the individual’s belief in themselves. You have to be able to look in the mirror and honestly, believe that you possess greatness. It doesn’t matter what endeavor you have chosen in your life. Whether you’re a blog writer, a motivational speaker, a fighter, or a computer programmer, if you’re putting your time and creativity into something, you should believe that you are better than anybody on earth. Why would you believe anything less? It doesn’t matter who else knows it or agrees with it, as long as you know it. That is the only belief that will turn that grand vision you have into a reality. If you have a vision for your life, I encourage you to live it now.
